I love this album will be amazing live December 27, 2009 Mr. J. Curd (Somerset) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I went to see 30 seconds to mars in Bristol and they were excellent live. This album feels like it needs to be live. They have even written lines for the audience to sing!. I love the general feel to the album. My favorite songs are Closer to the edge and alibi.
Oh as warning fortunately I listened to strangers to a strange land before allowing my daughter to listen to it ! should have explicit lyrics warnings.
ALOT better than i expected! December 16, 2009 Ms. Rc Wotus (Cornwall, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
i know that alot of people hate this band. i became interested in them after appreciating jared's acting, i recommend watching requiem for a dream as it's one of my favourite films. i loved their debut album which is alot more edgy and guitar based than the other two, i particularly recommend oblivion and capricorn. their second album a beautiful lie was a major improvement which still kept the rockiness whilst having a more mainstream feel. even though i loved their previous albums, that doesn't begin to say how i feel about this one. i genuinely think that this is an amazing achievement of the band and i hope that people put aside their prejudices to listen to it. reading the other reviews people seem to think that the 'children's choir' sounds bad, im pretty sure that its not children and is actually a crowd of 30 secs to mars fans, and i think that the use of them makes the album more intimate, 100 suns particularly shows this as i think the crowd make the song more special and genuine. my favourite tracks so far are night of the hunter, this is war and hurricane but rather than just downloading single songs i think that to appreciate it fully you need to buy the album as a whole. my favourite part of this album is the way that each song blends into the next, for example i love night of the hunter but it sounds so much better with escape being played before it. the 80's synths and the classical strings bring a new, exciting direction for the band and i think that jared's voice sounds alot more mature and mainstream - this is in no way a bad thing!some of the music reminds me of angels and airwaves who i love aswell
i definately recommend this album and i hope that people ignore negative opinions that they've previously made about the band to take the time to listen to the album as a whole!
Emotional and inspiring December 15, 2009 Trinity J (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I loved 30STM last album and was worried I wouldn't like the new one. But I do, I have not stopped listening to it since it arrived the day after it's release. It confirmed what I already knew, that this band are great, they know just how to say what they mean in musical terms. I liked it so much that I went and brought tickets to see them live in Feb. As a previous reviewer said. If you do nothing else this year, buy this album. I'm actualy here to buy another two copies, one for my son, and one for my son in law.
This Rocks December 15, 2009 Bardie 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of this band for a few years now and have the previous two awesome albums. I already love the current single 'Kings and Queens'. Some of the other tracks took a couple of listens to get used to. But now I love the album, Jarred's voice is awesome, the drumming and guitars will blow you away. Wasn't sure about kids quire initially, but it really does work well. Amazing use of strings too. Give it a few listens and you will love every track. A total grower!
No disappointment here. December 12, 2009 Naomi (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is War; a long overdue and highly anticipated new album from 30 Seconds to Mars.
And they've really delivered.
After hearing the release of Kings and Queens, which I loved instantly, I could see how much they had changed.
And after listening to the whole album, I could tell the ones that will make a massive impact (goosebumps are a good indication), and those that will grow on you.
Personally, Hurricane and Stranger in a Strange Land really hit the spot.
They feel so powerful, and really unique.
The fans in the background give Hurricane a great atmosphere.
And the music in the beginning of Stranger in a Strange Land can't help but captivate you.
I'd say (and this is just my opinion), that the weakest songs that will take time to grow on me(and possibly others) are Vox Populi, Search and Destroy and Alibi.
They are in no way 'awful' or 'dull'. Just not memorable when I think about the album.
The rest of the songs I haven't mentioned, really add to an extraordinary album.
You just have to listen for yourself.
Lastly, I truly adore how they've included the fans in a few of the songs, without going over the top.
As I previously mentioned, they add a great atmosphere to each song.
If you're even considering buying this album, don't think for another second and just buy it.
There are songs that you'll love, possibly accompanied by goosebumps, and those that you'll come to love in time.
