5 out of 5 stars The Book of Eli...   August 11, 2010
Milt Ingarfield (Arbroath, Scotland)

The Hughes twins Albert and Allen direct this 2010 production which was written by an ex-editor of the magazine "P.C. Gamer" Gary Whitta, his story is set in a World thirty years after an apocalyptic event that has destroyed much of the world and the survivors are living on the ashes of the past.

In a world that seems to have gone mad Denzel Washington plays Eli the lone figure walking the twisted landscape on a mysterious mission where he knows he must finish his journey regardless of others, the story feels like a western once Eli arrives at a town controlled by the warlord Carnegie played by Gary Oldman who is looking for a book and has much of his resources doing this, his right-hand man Redridge played by Ray Stevenson asks, "what's the point of sending out guys that can't read for books?"
Comparing the DVD to the Blu-ray disc the DVD colours looked weak and the sound which was 5.1 surround sound sounded flat.

The Blu-ray has DTS-HD master audio the signal type is MPEG 4 AVC, which shows this visual delight in the best light with the use of pastel tones for the backgrounds and normal tones for the main characters this gives the piece its atmosphere, the other post-apocalyptical production "The Road" used a similar device for the same purpose but where I found that production slow and painful to watch I found "The Book of Eli" very entertaining with well executed set action pieces and a message of hope with a great twist in the story at the end.

A disc to return to again for repeated viewing...

5 out of 5 stars Denzel delivers again   May 30, 2010

Just having Denzel Washington in a movie is always a good start and this film does not fail to deliver. Set in a post apocalyptic America; invoked by the almost total lack of colour in most of the film, the story follows Eli as he walks West across the desert carrying a precious book. On the way and in his path is Gary Oldman who also knows the power of the book and is determined to have it. Oldman rules a run down town from whence he sends out road gangs to pillage and search for the book. This part of the movie is like an old western and even features a saloon and a shoot out in the street. Eli escapes from the town and gains a friend in the virginal Solara; an excellent Mila Kunis, who follows him in the hope of reaching sanctity somewhere. This is a film that relies on a great storyline and fine acting without over the top special effects and CGI for the sake of it. This is a film that I will definitely be buying on blu-ray as it was so good. It is presented in widescreen letterbox format with an evocative and atmospheric soundtrack. To those critics who complained about its religious message I'll just say that I'm a lifetime atheist but even I recognise the power of the word of the Lord and essentially that is what it's about, not religion but the undeniable power of religion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent   August 19, 2010

I really enjoyed this, its full if action and the story is something different.

Please ignore all the Its a "Bible bashers" film because its not like that at all. The moral of the story is very simple and correct, if some people dont get it they they should probably stick to shoot eveything bloodbaths.
