Amazon.co.uk Review
Season 5 is a pivotal one for the riveting Grey's Anatomy. The doctors at Seattle Grace Hospital bloom and show new layers, the drama meets and exceeds that of previous seasons, and the show marks an important milestone--its 100th episode--with developments that, as with all the great Grey's episodes, brim with belly laughs and moving tears.

The season gets off to a slow start, with perhaps a bit more relationship angst than even diehard fans would prefer. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek "McDreamy" (Patrick Dempsey) start out with the familiar push-pull of their love affair--but a resolution, at last, is in their future. Callie (the excellent, and newly glamorous, Sara Ramirez) wrestles with her sexual orientation. Cristina (Sandra Oh, never better) is still picking up the pieces from her ruined engagement to the departed Burke (Isaiah Washington). To help her, or maybe to throw her for another loop, the series introduces the gruff, macho military doc, Owen (one of TV's sexiest hunks, Kevin McKidd).

Yet series creator and still active writer Shonda Rhimes unveils story arcs about midway through the season which have the surgeons' operating room dramas intersecting with the characters' private lives--with waves of heartbreaking results. Fans may take issue with "Dead Denny" (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his endless visitations--complete with sex--with Izzie (Katherine Heigl)--but as the season builds, Izzie's mystery illness, and her deep love for Alex (Justin Chambers) are treated with delicacy and respect, and Denny's character both reacts and ultimately supports. There's a wedding--a fairy-tale one--celebrating the show's 100th episode, and the love of the characters, and the pain they've overcome to get there--are equal parts of the very human, very lovely, result. The season finale is among the show's best ever, with the fate of two beloved characters, George (T.R. Knight) and Izzie, left unknown and laden with sorrow. --A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Best Season Yet!   November 2, 2009

Wow.
Having bought Season 5 (as with all the other box sets as they are released much earlier in the US and I couldn't wait!!) from amazon.com, I can honestly say this is the best season of Grey's yet.

A slow start, but once you begin to devour each episode it gathers such momentum until you reach the incredible, intense, thrilling and emeotional end, and it all loops back to the beginning of episode 1. I then had to watch it again and it was just as good 2nd time round!

Stunning performances from all the cast, great plot lines, medical dilemmas, hair issues, comic one liners, romance, tragedy, and sweeping scenery of Seattle shots - its all here.

I don't want to spoil any story for anyone, so no plot details or hints from me. But what I will say is if you (like me) can't resist an open box set, prepare to lose an entire weekend in your pyjamas. So so worth it - but now I'm desperate for season 6!!! You have been warned!!

**For those wanting to order from the US as I did - do check out the region coding on your DVD player. Mine is multi region, so I can play Region 1 (US) discs along with Region 2 (UK etc) discs. Check out the information pages on Amazon if you are in any doubt at all, and google too, as there may be a 'fix' for your player to enable multi-region discs.**

5 out of 5 stars Stick with it - the ending is AMAZING!!!!   September 6, 2009

Ok ok, I know most of you will be put off by the whole Denny and Izzie thing, but believe me, there is a reason behind it and one that will shock you to the core (unless of course you have read one of the idiots who puts spoliers in everything!)

The final episode of this season is still haunting me and I cannot wait for the next series to start, although i almost don't want what I think is going to happen to indeed happen.

If you love Grey's Anatomy, you will love this series, and it's new charaters just as much, if not more, than ever before!

Well, having been a Grey's fan from the start, I have been there for the highs and the lows, and boy have there been a few of them.

Season 5 is amazing, it takes a little while to warm up but once it gets there, it is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Meredith and Derek are having a healthy relationship. Christina develops a relationship with newcomer Owen Hunt, their relationship is very touching, with all the drama they go through. You have the Izzie, Denny and Alex love triangle, yes you read correctly, Denny is back. He is there for a important reason, which takes Izzie a while to realize, but once does, progresses the storyline at an impressive rate, which you find yourself going along for the ride.

There are many other storylines that warrant a mention, like the 3 part about the boy who needs a transplant or he will die, will Meredith use the organs of an prison inmate on death row? Will Meredith and Derek get married? Will George really go to Iraq to be a trauma surgeon????

Will Izzie survive???? Who is John Doe & will he survive????????????

One thing for sure - having just watched the season finale, and completely blown away with the plot twist, one of which I did not see coming, and with tears running down my cheeks, I'm now going to have to wait until season 6 to get the answers to those last 2 questions. Going to be a long summer.

I can quite easily say that this is by far the best season yet and the season finally was fantastic and breathtaking. With so many twists and turns, season 5 leaves you begging for more.
